World Series Game 5 - Oakland Athletics World Champions!

 World Series Game 5:

It was win-or-go-home time for the Pirates, but at least they had their ace Doug Drabek on the mound, facing the A's #4 starter Mike Moore. Oakland broke through first in the 3rd. Carney Lansford walked and went to 3rd on Walt Weiss hit-and-run single. Willie Randolph followed with a perfectly placed squeeze bunt to make it 1-0. They doubled their lead in the next inning when Harold Baines doubled and came around to score when Terry Steinbach singled and Bobby Bonilla fumbled the ball. Mike Moore pitched brilliantly, allowing only 1 hit and 2 walks over 5 1/3 scoreless innings. When the Pirates had several lefties coming up, Rick Honeycutt replace Moore. The way Moore had been pitching, that turned out tobe a mistake. Andy Van Slyke singled and Bonilla followed with a homerun lined down the left field line to tie the score. Pittsburgh got 2 more singles in the inning, but Honeycutt managed to escape any further damage. That's the way things stayed until the 7th. With 2 outs, Randolph, Rickey Henderson, and Willie McGee all singled, to make it 3-2. Gene Nelson replaced Honeycutt to start the 7th and retired 6 of the 7 batters he faced. In the 8th, Jose Canseco led off with a walk, stole 2nd, advanced to 3rd on a long fly ball, and scored on a sac fly to push the lead  to 2. Dennis Eckersley entered in the 9th to close things out, and he quickly got the first 2 outs. Jay Bell lined one into the gap for a double to bring the tying run to the plate. Eckersley got Jose Lind to hit an easy ground ball to 3rd. Carney Lansford threw the ball to Mark McGuire, and the A's were World Champs!

Jose Canseco was named the MVP (.333, 3 HR, .429, .833, 6 R, 6 RBI). Dave Henderson was stellar in part-time action (.444/.571/1.000, 5 R, 6 RBI all in only 14 PA), Willie Randolph hit .389, Mark McGuire had 2 HR and 5 RBI, despite hitting .222. Rickey Henderson hit only .222 and no SB, yet still produced 4 R and 6 RBI. Carney Lansford hit only .188, yet scored all 6 times he got on base. For Pittsburgh, Bobby Bonilla (.400/.429/1.000, 3 doubles, 3 HR, 5 R, 5 RBI) got serious consideration for MVP, but the voters went with the hot hand on the winning team. Jay Bell hit .353, but didn't score or get any RBI. Andy Van Slyke hit .300/.364/.500). Oakland hit only a little better than the Pirates, but they outscored Pittsburgh 34-13 in the Series. Scott Sanderson tossed a beautiful 3-hit shutout in game 3 to lead the pitching.

World Series Game 4: Big 8th Inning Propels Athletics To Victory. Now One Win Away From Title

 World Series Game 4:

Sid launched a two-run homer in the first, and Mark McGuire matched that in the 4th to make it 2-2. Jeff King homered in the 5th to break the tie. That's the way things stayed until the bottom of the 8th, when the wheels fell off completely for Pittsburgh. The A's loaded the bases with nobody out, and Rickey Henderson hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game. Dave Henderson walked to re-load the bases, and Bob Kipper walked Jose Canseco to break the tie. Harold Baines and Terry Steinbach singled in runs to cap the 5-run rally. Stewart was trying to go all the way, but after getting the first 2 outs, he ended up giving up 2 singles with 2 out. Dennis Eckersley calmly came on and struck out the last batter for the save.

World Series Game 3: Sanderson Pitches Gem As Oakland Rolls Over Bucos

 World Series Game 3:

This one was over early. In the bottom of the first, with two on and two out, Mark McGuire singled in a run, and Terry Steinbach followed with a three run bomb. Harold Baines singled, and Willie Randolph doubled him in to make it 5-0 at the end of one. In the 5th, Dave Henderson hit a three run homer of his own to make it 8-0. That was far more than Scott Sanderson needed, as he went the whole way for a three hit shutout.
