GAME 6:
It was a rematch of game 2...Bob Welch vs. Dave Johnson. This time it was Oakland's turn to get off to a quick start on Jose Canseco's 2-run, 1st inning homerun. Steve Finley's homerun in the 3rd cut the lead in half. In the 5th, Harold Baines pushed the lead back to 2 with an RBI single, then Mark McGwire gave them a lot of breathing room with a long 3-run shot to left center. In the 8th, Dave Henderson's pinch hit RBI double scored another, then Carney Lansford really put the game away with a 3-run homer of his own. Welch held the Orioles to 1 run over 6+ innings, and Rick Honeycutt and Gene Nelson finished up to send Oakland to the World Series.
Oakland 10 Baltimore 1
W: Welch L: Johnson
It was a very interesting series in which the home team won only once. Jose Canseco was named the series MVP, hitting .318 with 3 HRs, 5 runs, and 7 RBI. Mark McGwire only hit .208, but he made his hits count with 3 HRs and 6 RBI. Other good performances were turned in by Walt Weiss (.333), Terry Steinbach (.318), and Rickey Henderson (.280, .400 OBP, HR, 5 SB). Cal Ripken Jr. led the way for Baltimore (.333, 3 2B, 2 HR, 5 RBI), assisted by Randy Milligan (2 HR, 5 RBI), Steve Finley (.368), Joe Orsulak (.348, 2 2B, 3B, HR, 4 runs), and Billy Ripken (.333). On the pitching side, Dave Stewart had a 1.15 ERA over 15+ innings, but managed to lose 1 of his 2 starts. Bob Welch won both of his starts with a 2.77 ERA. For Baltimore, Ben McDonald had 1 great start, and Pete Harnisch and Bob Milacki didn't pitch too badly. The big difference was the bullpens. Oakland's pen allowed only 6 his and 2 walks over 13 scoreless innings. For Baltimore, Gregg Olson threw 4 scoreless innings, but the rest of the bullpen allowed 13 hits and 10 runs over 10 2/3 innings.
